Challenging time in
France for student
A 19-year-old student from Liskeard has just returned from a challenging four months in France, having completed a course organised by a charity - The Smallpeice Trust.
The trust, which promotes engineering as a career to young people, sent Sam Williamson to BAe Systems in Toulouse for three months to undertake a variety of engineering projects. These projects included working on technical issues relating to the safe running of aircraft, checking parts of the autopilot system, and investigating some of the problems encountered by aircraft operators.
Prior to the placement Sam, an ex-pupil of Liskeard school and community college, had spent three months at the University of Plymouth studying engineering and design skills, management techniques and computer aided design. This was followed by a month at a specialist language school in France.
At the end of May, Sam will be giving an exhibition of his work at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, and then intends to spend the rest of the summer working before going to Cranfield University where he has been offered a place to study Aeromechanical Systems engineering.
The foundation year is a gap-year scheme for students going to university to study for an engineering related degree. It is heavily subsidised by the trust and costs the students just £30 per week.

Schemes
submitted
LISKEARD town clerk, Brenda Furse, said that the Parade scheme and the Millennium crosses in Liskeard have been submitted for the Caradon Design Awards 2001.
Display
banners
AN application by Safeway Stores in Liskeard for consent to display banners on lamp columns was due to be considered last night (Thursday) by Caradon councillors.
The proposal was for permission to display banners from ten lamp columns within the car park - the banners for promotional purposes only. An objection was made Roger Terry, of Liskeard Chamber of Commerce, who said the advertising banners divert trade from small independent garages. In their report the council officers said 'criticism has been received that banners are currently being displayed on various lamp columns'. A recommendation of refusal was made by the officers.
