Topping out ceremony
THE topping out ceremony, on completion of roof works at the site of the Liskeard Heritage centre at Foresters Hall, has taken place.
The ceremony was carried out by town mayor Pat Ambler.
The conversion is being undertaken by MDA Building contractors under the control of Mr M D Ackford, for Liskeard town council.
The building will form the new Liskeard and District Museum and Tourist Information Centre, enabling the existing museum to be relocated, and many artefacts and exhibits to be displayed to their best advantage.
Additionally, a special display room and public research area, to be named 'The Jeanne Rees Research Room' is provided in the extension at first floor level.
The total project, which began on August 7 last year, is valued at £497,000. Additional works encountered, and poor weather conditions since the start of the project, have resulted in some delays to the completion date which is now projected for June 2001.
Funding for the project is being provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the EU development fund, the single regeneration budget, the Regional Development Agency and both Caradon district and Liskeard town councils.
The museum is due to be opened later in the year, as the building needs to be dried out before the artefacts are put on display.
