Top marks for

homework club

LISKEARD library is celebrating the success of its Homework club, with membership having reached l00.

The club, run by study support officer Anyon Nazir, began following the opening of the library's resource room two years ago. Since then it has benefited from access to the Internet, and a variety of electronic sources for the children to access information for their studies.

When the club began it obtained sponsorship from Liskeard job centre which provided a number of homework packs containing paper and writing equipment. They are kept at the library so children have their own equipment when they arrive.

The Job Centre is now to sponsor a celebratory 'l00 up' party and provide the cake. Their deputy manager, Simon Griffiths, said: 'The Employment Service is keen to support the Homework Club. It proves working together we can provide worthwhile services to all age groups.'

The club runs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30-5.30pm. Further information can be obtained by calling at the library or telephoning 01579 343285.

Costs of the EU

were highlighted

AN open meeting on the European Union was hosted by the UK Independence party at Liskeard's Lord Eliot Hotel on February 25.

The speakers were party chairman Mike Nattrass, deputy leader Graham Booth and the party's prospective parliamentary candidate for South East Cornwall Graham Palmer. Matters highlighted included costs of membership of the EU, said to be currently £1.8 million per hour. The subject of major supermarkets buying cheaper food from countries not subject to welfare and pesticide controls enforced in this country was raised, as well as small and medium sized abattoirs ceasing to trade due to extra costs caused by EU directives.

It was also said the Common Fisheries Policy means British fishermen are unable to land fish unless they are within quota limits, which leads to fish being dumped at sea, or fines being imposed. At the same time, however, it was said qualified majority voting in Europe means other nations will continue to ignore quota restrictions. The costs of small and medium firms implementing social benefits imposed by the government as part of Europe's social chapter were also highlighted.

After a short break the annual meeting of the South East Cornwall branch of the party was held with the election of officers, and the committee.
