White lining

to be finished

LISKEARD town councillors have been told by their colleague Mike Gillbard, who is also a county councillor, that white lining on the Parade scheme in Liskeard is due to be carried out by the end of this month.

Mr Gillbard gave the news at Tuesday's monthly town council meeting.

More lights

for Merrymeet

CARADON councillors have agreed to give 50% of the cost of installing additional street lighting in Merrymeet.

The request for the extra lights, at the Kingswood Estate, initially came from Menheniot parish council following concerns over dwelling burglaries and thefts from vehicles in the area.

It is a normal policy for the district council to make a 50% grant for new parish council lighting schemes.

Refusal

recommended

A PLAN by Dawe Construction to build 15 bungalows with garages at Grove Park, Station Road, Liskeard, has been recommended for refusal by Liskeard town council.

A recommendation of refusal was put forward because of over intensification of development, and problems of access and traffic. The final decision rests with Caradon district council.

Top award

for Roseland

ROSELAND Waste Management, which runs Lean Quarry at Horningtops, has won a top environmental award for its expertise.

It has received a commendation from the Cornwall Waste Minimisation award 2000 for showing commitment to continuous environmental improvement through waste minimisation. The competition was organised by Groundwork Environmental Business Services.

The Horningtops site is licensed to accept up to 75,000 tonnes of material annually and plans have been submitted to Cornwall council to extend its capacity to enable it to recover more commercial wastes collected from local businesses. It handles 15,000 tonnes a year of primarily construction and commercial wastes, of which 75% is diverted from landfill - and 31% is recovered for aggregates, metal and timber recycling.

Fond farewell to

a school bursar

LISKEARD school and community college has been bidding farewell to its bursar, Judith Coote, after 31 years of loyal service.

Judith, who had been a pupil of Liskeard Grammar School, initially joined the Grammar School staff in a secretarial role, but took on more and more responsibilities through the years. Ten years ago she became bursar and clerk to the then Liskeard school governing body, after which she took on the task of planning and controlling the budget for what were then two sites - together with health and safety, catering and cleaning matters and grounds maintenance, as well as much more.

Alan Sedgley, school head teacher, described her as a 'wonderful supporter of the school' - most of this work carried out in the background. He said she had a 'smashing sense of humour' but was also quite forceful when she wanted things done.

Former Liskeard school head teacher, Tony Wood, was present when retirement gifts were given, as well as John Lingard who was grammar school head when Judith started work there, and Judith's parents.

Judith, of Looe, is spending her retirement travelling with her husband, Geoff, and is currently enjoying a cruise which will take in the Falkland Islands.

of cameras

A MEETING is to be held today (Friday) at which the monitoring procedure for the new security cameras in Liskeard will be outlined.

The meeting is to be attended by Liskeard town councillors.

Five new CCTV cameras have been sited in the town in a bid to cut down on crime.

Jeanne is new

Forum chairman

AT the annual meeting of Liskeard town forum, held in the council chamber at Luxstowe House last Wednesday, Caradon councillor Jeanne Rees was elected as chairman, with Nick Mallard, a Liskeard town councillor, as vice chairman.

Mrs Rees thanked former chairman, John Ryder who did not stand for re-election, for his efforts on behalf of the town throughout the time he had been a Forum member. Thanks were also extended to the late John Carroll for his work representing people with disabilities. Elizabeth Gray was elected to succeed him, with Robert Elford elected to take the place of Mr Ryder as a sitting local community representative.

Amendments to the Forum's constitution, which would make it more relevant to the era of Objective One status, were proposed and debated. It is intended that these be ratified at an extraordinary meeting prior to the next business meeting. The annual accounts for the last financial year were approved.

The next Forum meeting will be on February 21.

New assistant

head teacher

THE new assistant head teacher at Liskeard school and community college is Jon Lawrence, who has the main responsibility for pupils regarding motivation, rewards and sanctions, and behaviour and discipline.

Other new members of staff this term include Marc Penrose who has joined from Redruth school as head of modern languages, science teacher Simon Will and former pupil, Debbie Drinkell, who has joined the science technician team.

The school has been celebrating sports success - the under 14 boys team won the Cornwall Hockey Association's county tournament and six year 11 boys were selected for the Devon and Cornwall trial, some advancing beyond this. These were Robert Andrews, Sam Hocking, Robert Hoskin, Jamie Robbins, James Sedgley and Andrew Sheer.
