Rain fears hit Parade party

AN 82% chance of rain has led to Liskeard town council cancelling revels which had been planned for the town's Parade to celebrate New Year's Eve.

The plans had been made following last year's successful New Year's Eve party in the centre of town, to herald in the Millennium, to which hundreds of people turned up. On Tuesday night members of the full council, at their monthly meeting, passed a recommendation by the Millennium management committee that the street party to welcome the year 2001 should be cancelled due to the 'strong probability of inclement weather.'

At Tuesday's meeting Jeanne Rees asked for the situation to be clarified as she said she had received a number of complaints from residents, annoyed that the event was not going ahead.

A number of other councillors also said they had been approached by people wondering what the situation was. Bands had been booked for the occasion, to provide live music. Mrs Rees said the recommendation from the committee had 'come as a shock' to a number of people. She said the previous such event had brought the community together, and there was a feeling of disappointment in Liskeard that this would not be repeated this December 31.

Mike Gillbard said he thought that the council should give a good reason for its decision. It was pointed out that the weather forecast showed that there was an 82% chance of rain for that evening, and there were fears that the party would be a wash out.

It was decided that, with only about a fortnight to go, it was too late to change their minds again, and restore the revels to the calendar - and so the recommendation was accepted. However, the mayor, Pat Ambler, said that perhaps a similar event could be organised in the spring, when the weather improved.

Have a nice day – from

Mrs Tamar bridge!

THE project team, formed to carry out the widening and strengthening of the Tamar Bridge, have discovered that they have a new fan – an American lady called Tamar Bridge.

Mrs Bridge, 42, from Oregon, whose maiden name was Lerman, contacted the team after finding the bridge website on the Internet. She sent them her driving licence, just to prove she was not joking. They were so impressed they are going to keep her in touch with all the bridge work. She said: 'When I became Mrs Tamar Bridge I had no idea of the implications.'

Free bridge and ferry

TOLLS are to be suspended on the Tamar Bridge from 6am on December 25 to 6am on December 26, while travel on the Torpoint ferries will be free between llpm on Christmas Eve and 6.45am on Boxing Day.
