Plan for an arcade

CARADON councillors were due last night (Thursday) to discuss a plan by Mr and Mrs M Darby to change the premises at Pictures and Frames, l Church Street, Liskeard from retail use to an amusement arcade.

In a report to members of the planning control committee (west) officers said the premises are currently used as a retail shop in conjunction with the amusement arcade adjacent. The scheme is for the extension of the arcade into this section of the building. They added that the extension is fairly small scale and will not have an undue effect upon retail activity in this location.

It was recommended that delegated authority to approve the application should be given, following the end of the consultation period today (Friday).

Cash machines

at Safeway?

LAST night (Thursday) Caradon councillors were due to discuss an application by Safeway Stores Plc to install an ATM cash machine adjacent to the main lobby.

Planning officers said in their report that the application proposes the erection of an extension close to the main store entrance to house two cash machines. It would be sited under the existing entrance canopy.

Officers said they understood there were some concerns that the proposal was centred on provision of a service - not related to food sales - which may as a result harm the town centre. The report to the planning control committee (west) added: 'In this regard it must be noted that the provision of cash machines outside existing town centres is becoming more common . . In the absence of any evidence as to the harm that these ATMs would cause to the town centre, it would be very difficult to defend a refusal decision.'

The final events took in a musical based on the Nicene Creed, called 'We Believe', produced by Rob Frost and Maggie Holden in the New Hall, Liskeard school. The oratorio Handel's messiah was then performed in the Methodist church with the choir, numbering over 120 singers, drawn from local churches and other groups. Roy Wilton was choirmaster and Jonathan Delbridge played the organ.
