Safeway appeal

is postponed

LISKEARD Chamber of Commerce members were told at their meeting last week that the resumed Safeway planning appeal was unlikely to take place before the new year.

The appeal, which began in October, was due to be resumed this month but has been postponed.

Secretary Jane Pascoe said there was some good news regarding the Chamber's opposition to the supermarket's plan to expand.

An identical appeal by Safeway in Saffron Waldon had, she said, been turned down by the inspector. This was, she added, very good news for Liskeard.

Costumes

want occupants

THERE are 15 empty character costumes waiting to be filled, Liskeard Chamber of Commerce members heard at their meeting.

The costumes have been hired for the Chamber's fun shopping day in the town on December 16 and volunteers are wanted to wear them.

Wearers can be any size, any age or any sex and most have face masks so not even your best friend won't be able to spot you.

Any one who can help should contact the Chamber through Liskeard Town Council Offices.

One cleaner

TOWN councillor John Mashiter wants to know why Liskeard only appears to have one street cleaning machine.

Mr Mashiter asked Liskeard Chamber of Commerce for support, saying that he understood one of the machines was not being used because there was nobody to drive it. Because of this, he said, the town was a mess.

The chamber agreed to contact Caradon to ask for more information.

Charity night with

a brand new band

A CHARITY rock/blues music evening is to be held at Lux Park social club, Liskeard on November 24 at 8pm - the event sponsored by the RNLI South West region.

The evening is free with donations on the night, and it is hoped to have an informal fun evening with music spanning four decades. Live rock and blues will be performed by local band Xe-Roks, and South West rock and blues DJ Chris Fontana will paly/compere the evening, which will include a raffle.

Everyone involved has donated their services for free.

The band has been formed for this event, although they have played in other bands previously. They include Mac on drums, John on lead guitar, Dave on vocals, Yorky on rhythm guitar and Graham on bass guiar, Mack and Yorky currently serve in the Royal Navy, while Dave used to sing with the Black Sabbath tribute band Slack Babbath. The choice of the charity to benefit - the RNLI - is down to the band's strong maritime links.

Visually handicapped

club needs help

THE Liskeard Visually Handicapped Club is desperately in need of an organiser and helpers to run the group.

Liskeard Viscap is a friendly club run by volunteers for the blind and partially sighted who live in Liskeard and the surrounding district.

Members meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the Long Room at Liskeard public hall; and sometimes on the fourth Wednesday as well.

The members are brought to the meeting by taxi or other transport, paid for by the Cornwall Blind Association who also give a great deal of support and training to helpers.

Twice a year there is a trip to somewhere interesting members would like to visit.

The organiser, backed up by helpers is in charge of arranging transport and speakers.

Anyone who could spare some time to become an organiser for the clubs, or who could help in any way, is asked to contact the Cornwall Blind Association on 01872 261110 or Mrs Jane Mann on 01579 362960.

Monthly event

CALLINGTON and district branch of Cats Protection will hold their monthly fund-raising event in the Liskeard Long Room on December 2 from 9am-1pm.

Liskeard Scout

activities

SCOUTING in the West Caradon area was 90 years old this October. A birthday camp for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures was organised for September 15 - 17.

It was to be held at Nine Ashes, Washaway, Bodmin and there was expected to be 300 at the camp. Unfortunately, due to the bad weather the camp was cancelled and has been rearranged for May next year.

Nine packs entered the District Swimming Gala and Darite won the first place shield.

On Saturday, October 28, Flambards were holding their end of season fireworks display. Peter, the assistant County Commissioner decided it would be a nice outing for the Cubs as the camp had been cancelled.

120 Cubs and leaders went for the day's outing and spent several hours on various rides and later in the evening watched the fireworks display.

Bonfire night for the Beavers and Cubs went happily, with the burning of the guy, sparklers, eating soup and hot dogs, followed by a camp fire sing song. 15 Beavers and 12 Cubs had a good evening, as did parents who joined in.

The annual Cubs skills day, now known as Fact Day was held at Callington Scout Hut on Saturday November 4. Out of the 14 packs in the district only five arrived. Pensilva Cubs did extremely well and will be going on to take part at County level on November 19.

Knockers win

the skittles

THE 12th annual skittles competition was held once again at Lanreath hall on Saturday, and proved a financial success for the Macmillan Nurses cancer relief fund.

Although numbers were down 11 teams of four entered and skittled for the Macmillan cup. After two hours of bowling the top four teams were drawn into a knock-out competition which resulted in the Cornish Knockers getting the better of the Studs by just one pin in a close game.

The other semi-final showed another close affair resulting in the Drifters getting the better of the Neighbours by two pins. In the final the Drifters (Carol, Mike, Carole and Aleatha) were a little disappointed with their 52 pins as the Knockers (Dennis, Brian, Clive and Brian) managed to account for 61 pins.

Dr John Critchley and Angela Tamblyn presented the cup and trophies and thanked Gerry and Margaret for running the skittles, and all the helpers for the buffet and raffle.

Playwise meetings

held in Liskeard

PLAYWISE, a project of the Cornwall Rural Community Council and Cornwall Play Association, held its first Network meeting on Thursday.

The meeting took place at the Lord Eliot Hotel in Liskeard and was attended by representatives from various organisations including Liskeard Town Council, Liskeard School and Community College, Linkinhorne, South Hill and Duloe Parish Council's.

The aim of the meeting was to provide an opportunity for anyone with an interest in play, to be able to meet with like minded people and discuss any play issues or needs that are not being met in the area.

Many issues were tackled at the meeting, including the lack of quality play provision in Liskeard and the surrounding areas, safety for children, funding for play areas and how play can be recognised as not only an essential part of a child's development by as one of their human rights.

The next meeting in the Liskeard are will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2001 and anyone is welcome to attend. For more details on the Playwise Network meetings contact the Playwise Office on 01872 279977.

The application, which has been recommended for approval by Caradon's planning officers, is for Plum Tree Farm. It was put forward by L Hendy.

The two polytunnels would measure three metres by 20 metres.

December 20

Taking part will be Liskeard silver band with their musical director Don Howlett, and the Porthpyra Singers with their director Harold Miller. Adding to the atmosphere will be one or two donkeys, to be brought along by Harold Burt and accompanied by two young children dressed as Mary and Joseph.

Mr Burt is also to supply a Nativity scene with a manger, while Father Christmas will be adding to the proceedings as well.
