Seagulls debated
THE perennial question of seagulls was once again highlighted at the recent monthly meeting of Liskeard town council.
Members said they were anxious that plans for dealing with the local seagull problem should be put into place before next breeding season.
A letter was read from an expert, based at Newquay, who deals with seagulls, through proofing roofs etc., and quotes were given.
It was decided that the matter should be discussed at the council's next finance committee meeting.
Dawn selected
to speak
DAWN Austin, of Liskeard, was selected by Tory Central office to be one of the five Conservative councillors to speak at Conference in the local government slot, debated yesterday at Bournemouth (Thursday).

Somerfield supports
Macmillan Nurses
STAFF at Liskeard's Somerfield store in Pondbridge hill are putting a lot of fundraising energy along with staffs at their other outlets in the West Region, into raising money for Macmillan Nurses.
The regional director, Mark Williamson, is entering the London Marathon in March in support of the charity, and has asked all the stores in his area to help him raise at least £70,000.
Liskeard got off to a good start when grocery assistant Gary Pethick volunteered to have his usually ample locks shaved down to a grade one. His 'hairoism' has already raised £300 and he wants to thank his colleagues and customers for making his effort very worthwhile. Charged with the carrying out of the hair raising deed was Andy Blackwell of David Rosson (hair salon).
Staff say they are busily arranging other events which they hope their customers will support for such a good cause as the Macmillan Nurses.
Chess Club open
their season
THE first league match of the season saw Liskeard A team entertain Liskeard B and win 4-3. Gary Trideau's pressure resulted in the winning material over Don King which led to Gary winning.
Keith Brewer was very lucky to get a win against Andy Cooke in the end game, after the match looking like being drawn all the way through.
Douglas Cooke carried on his winning ways against Ian Bowman, and David Lucas won the exchange and then the match against Mike King.
Sheilah Cooke chalked up the only point for the 'B' team, winning on time.
For the first time in many years Liskeard are running two teams this season. New members would be welcome to join us at the Varley Lane Bowling Club on Monday evenings at 1930 hours. Further information can be obtained from the Secretary Don King 01579 346333 or Match Captain Keith Brewer 01503 230569.
