Sailing race for trust

FOR the second year running, a sailing race for the Anthony Nolan Trust was organised in memory of John and Brenda Hearl's son Robert who died from leukaemia at the age of 16. Saltash Sailing Club, of which John and Brenda are members, have been raising money in various ways for the trust.

John participated in the race from Plymouth to Saltash when 12 boats took part and the first boat home was crewed by David Barden and Ian Munslow in a Laser 4000. As it was judged by handicap the actual winners were: 1. James Kemp (Saltash Sailing Club), 2. Phil Hooper (Saltash Sailing Club) and 3. Robert Clark.

The event was rounded off in style with a social event in the clubhouse with local band Red Handed and a presentation with the first prize of a Tim Thompson print kindly donated by Tim and his wife.

Lynne Hodgson, Area Appeals Manager for the trust, said: 'We are extremely grateful to Saltash Sailing Club and in particular Brenda and John for organising this fabulous event. The club have raised over £300 for the charity which will be used to test more potential life-saving donors for our national register who can offer hope to the thousands of children and young adults suffering from leukaemia who are awaiting treatment.'

The event was part of the Saltash Sailing Club's weekend of charity racing with competitors battling it out in the Laser 11 and National 12s classes.

Over 100 competitiors

SALTASH Leisure Centre welcomed over 100 competitors in a swimming gala on Saturday evening for Caradon's first Masters Sprint Meet (affiliated to Western Counties ASA and Cornwall County ASA).

This was a unique occasion as competitors did not receive medals and trophies but instead donated the money that they would have won in medals to charity, for the Skills Development Centre at Marsh Mills, Plymouth. The idea was that instead of spending money on the trophies, £175 would be given to this charity and Colin Breed MP presented the cheque last month to the centre.

There were just three team trophies on Saturday and they were presented by Eric Lewis, leader of Caradon Council, who thanked the staff of Saltash Leisure Centre for hosting the event and congratulated the competitors and welcomed the supporters and said as this was such a success they hoped to repeat the event next year. Swimmers came from all around Devon and Cornwall and one team came all the way from Bicester, near Oxford. Graham Cooke was the compere and Chris Elliot, was the promoter's rep; Lynne Elliott of the Caradon Cobras Swimming Club and Chris Tremellen were the referees; and John Hickman the starter. Judges were D Turner, J Varker, S Webb, B Clements, G Marriott and H Scott. David Smith and Janet Moore were the organisers.

Swimmers taking part ranged from 25 to 70 and the winning teams received a glass engraved plaque. They were:

1. Best mens team,1st Dawlish and Teignmouth (225 points), 2nd Wadebridge (139), 3rd Launceston (133). 2. Ladies Team, 1st Newquay (106), 2nd Caradon (84), 3rd Wadebridge (92). 3. Best overall, 1st Dawlish and Teignmouth (319), 2nd Wadebridge (239), 3rd Launceston (226).

Sevemteem teams took part, and at the end a buffet supper was served in the leisure centre. Many supporters came along to cheer on their teams and the leisure centre was full to capacity, making it a lively and enjoyable event.
