Community centre

for Liskeard

THE board of Liskeard Community Centre and Cornwall County Council have now completed the sale of the former Junior School in Varley Lane. The acquisition of the extensive site and buildings, worth £16,000, fulfils the desire for a much needed community centre for the town.

The Centre's four key user groups - the pre-school, Liskeard Arts Action, CHYP and the Cornwall Youth Service - can now meet with the architect to plan how they wish to see the premises developed. Given the amount of space and opportunity the buildings offer, it is hoped and envisaged that other community groups and projects will be able to utilise the centre's facilities. At the moment an ICT or computer site is planned as well as a cafe.

Work should commence is October. It is hoped that by Spring 2001, the Community Centre will be up and running for the benefit of the all in the community.

School reunion

for class of 1964

A SCHOOL reunion for Liskeard Grammar School, the intake class of 1964 is taking place on Sunday September 10 at The Lord Elliot Hotel, Liskeard.

The reunion starts at 12 noon with a buffet lunch and so far 48 out of the 58 students have been contacted by Graham Osbourne, who now lives in Southampton. Former students in places as far away as Canada and Sri Lanka have been contacted.

Graham explained: 'It's quite poignant as the old grammar school will be demolished at some point. The females of the class are the most difficult to find as they keep changing their names when they get married!'

If you are a former student from the intake class of 1964 and have not been contacted contact Graham on 01935 83478 for more information.

Time travel at

the holiday club

LISKEARD children experienced Time Travel when they attended the Salvation Army's Holiday Club during the summer break. Up to 30 youngsters piled into Professor Poti Potts' time machine and met characters from the past who helped them understand more about God's plan to rid the world of all that was bad.

With games, stories and craft making sessions the children were keen to bring their parents along on Sunday to see them receive their certificates and to enjoy a barbecue at the end of the family service.

Doug and Michelle Hayter who run the Salvation Army in the town are hoping that many of the children will be able to attend their weekly clubs on Sundays and Wednesdays at 11.45am and 6pm respectively.

Search for words

THE search is on for words and pictures about life in Liskeard for a series of books to be published early in 2001. The publishers, Penhaligon Page are inviting people who live in the town and the surrounding areas to send opinions, myths, poems, anecdotes, factual accounts and photographs for possible inclusion.

Editor Suzy Walton says 'We intend to produce a full and fascinating picture of Liskeard and are looking for material that will bring out all aspects of the area - things that people find attractive, dramatic and interesting'.

Submissions should be sent to Liskeard in Words and Pictures, Penhaligon Page, Remus House, Coltsfoot Drive, Woodston, Peterborough, PE2 9JX. Items should arrive by November 30.

Remanded

for reports

A GUILTY plea was entered by 19-year-old Benjamin Dann of Barn, Street, Liskeard, when he was charged at Truro Crown Court last week with having possessed cannabis resin with intent to supply another last December 23.

Told that Dann had already served a custodial sentence for a similar offence, Recorder Paul Dunkels agreed to postpone sentence pending the preparation of reports. Dann was granted unconditional bail.
