ST Martin's church women's group will next meet on September 20 when they will hold a Harvest Home.
The speaker will be the rector, Rev Martin Sellix.
September date for
beating the bounds
LISKEARD'S traditional beating of the bounds ceremony will take place on September 16, starting from The Parade at l0am.
Those who wish to take part are urged to wear suitable clothing and stout shoes as some of the paths to be used are very muddy. Packed lunches can be left at the Public hall, and will be taken to Treworgey Manor where the walkers will have a lunch break.
The hike will include Town to Maudlin for the 'traditional bumping of the mayor', Hendra Bridge to Craddock Ford, Tremabe Bridge to meet St Cleer councillors and then on to Treworgey Manor where lunch will be taken from 1.15-2.30pm, Treworgey to Looe Mills to meet Dobwalls councillors, and then Looe Mills to the bottom of Lodge Hill where the walk is due to finish around 4.30-5pm.
The ceremony was originally carried out to establish all was in order, and the boundary stones had not been moved. The bounds of the borough were fixed in the Royal Charter of l587 by Queen Elizabeth 1. They enclose an almost square area of 2,704 acres, the distance around them being ten miles. On the route there are a number of granite stones, some marked B for borough and others P for parish. The Liskeard Old Cornwall Society, and Liskeard town archivist say there is not an exact record of all the stones, so it would be appreciated if those taking part made a note of the position of any seen en route.
