Time capsule delivered
Liskeard town council has been handed the time capsule which is to be buried in the town, under one of the new Celtic crosses, to mark the year 2000.
Schools in the town have been contacted and told of a competition for pupils to write a letter to a friend in the year 3000.
Entries are to be received for judging by March 31, and the winner will be given a £10 prize voucher.
At the meeting it was suggested that it would be best to bury the capsule at the end of the year 2000 so that all the town's activities during this year can be recorded on microfilm - such as the carnival and St Matthew's Fair.
Thanks were given to the capsule's craftsman. Pat Ambler, the deputy mayor, passed on the request that, as no charge had been made, it would be appreciated if a donation could be given to Mozambique in lieu.
Printer cartridges to save lives
An appeal has been launched to computer users in Liskeard - send your used printer cartridges to charity as they could save lives.
Project Hope UK, part of one of the worlds largest international health charities, is urging Liskeard people not to throw away their empty printer cartridges but to send them to the charity in a move which could raise thousands of life saving pounds.
The cartridges can be sold for £2 each to bring better health to the victims of war, disaster - such as the Mozambique floods - and poverty all over the world.
The appeal is specifically for the small inkjet cartridges, which are primarily used in printers supporting nearly all PCs and which can be easily posted to charity.
Any make of cartridge can be accepted, except Epsom. They should be placed in a plastic sandwich/freezer bag and posted in an envelope to: Accutecc, (Hope appeal), Freepost (ANG 2044), Harlow, CM20 2YF.
Companies wishing to support the scheme by sending their cartridges in bulk should call: 01279 401404.
Project HOPE UK has already sent over £3 million worth of medical supplies to aid the victims of the Kosovo crisis.
It also supports long term health programmes in countries like Malawi (where it has just launched a programme to prevent cervical cancer), Bosnia (where it is running a programme to help disabled children) and Guatemala (where it is helping very poor families to improve their own health).
Anyone wishing to know more about the scheme should contact Eleanor Higgins of Project HOPE UK on 0208 990 2246.
