Farmer offers reward for information

A reward for £20 is being offered by Mr Ernest Varcoe of Liskeard to find those responsible for fly tipping on his land.

Mr Varcoe arrived on Monday morning at Hayley's Field on the Duloe road, where he keeps some livestock, to discover that someone had indiscriminantly tippped a large amount of hedge and tree cuttings over his gate.

Mr Varcoe, who had sheds burned down in an arson attack last September, on the same ground, says that whoever dumped the rubbish, which included branches from willow trees and privet, would have had to have used a trailer as there was too much to have simply been carried in the boot of a car.

Anyone who thinks they may have seen something happening between the hours of 7pm on Sunday evening and 7.30am on Monday is asked to contact Mr Varcoe on 01579 348028.

RAFA branch wins award for efficiency

The East Cornwall branch of RAFA has won the South West area efficiency competition for small branches.

The award was announced at the branch's recent annual meeting by the SW area vice-chairman, Les Cook, who was the guest. The presentation will be made at the area reunion in March at Torquay.

In her address at the annual meeting, at the RBL in Liskeard, the branch president, Air Cdr P Joy Tamblin, thanked her officers for their hard work during the past year. The committee report highlighted that events during the past year included raising just under £6,000 for the Wings Appeal, which gives help to distressed members or their dependants through the branch welfare officer.

Officers for 2000 will include Air Cdr Tamblin as president, Ken Brown as vice president, Bob Fripp as chairman and regional representative, John Enever as secretary, Gordon Tilley as treasurer and area representative, Ray Pearce as welfare officer, Doug Weeks as Wings Appeal organiser, Joan Fripp as membership secretary, Pam Pearce as social secretary, D O Tamblin as standard bearer with John Enever as reserve and Canon Paul Goddard as padre.

The annual cruise will be on July 19, the president's coffee morning on August 9, and the receipt of the Millennium scroll from the St Austell branch at a social evening on May 24. It will be taken to Plymouth from Liskeard, via Looe, on May 27 by various forms of transport including train, foot and boat.

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month, except December, in the upper room of the RBL Liskeard at 8pm.

Scouts' application

The trustees of the lst Liskeard Scout Group have applied to Caradon council to extend their current leased headquarters area in Castle Park.

They have also asked for an extension, which would enable them to provide disabled access to the scout hut. The existing entrance to the hut is unsuitable for such works because of the nature of the site.

No objection has been raised by council officers.

Dwellings plan for debate again

The application from the Guinness Trust (South West area) to build 12 semi-detached dwellings on land off Lanchard Lane, Liskeard, was due to be discussed once more by Caradon councillors yesterday evening (Thursday).

A site visit was held earlier this year to debate the proposal, and a number of objections have been received regarding it. These mainly concerned loss of privacy, felling of trees, an increase in traffic and high density development.

Delegated authority to approve the application was granted to officers at a recent planning committee meeting, subject to the receipt of revised plans and reconsultations. A report from officers to councillors explained that it is understood there are still some concerns about the proposal, and it is considered right that the plan is brought back to the committee for determination.

Officers have recommended approval, subject to consideration of consultation comments and to a number of conditions.
