Canadian journey

Harold Snowdon took Liskeard Sisterhood members on a journey to New England in Canada at their recent meeting.

The journey started with a flight from Plymouth airport to Boston, which is in a region where many towns derive their names from the South West - such as Andover, Liskeard, Bristol and Charlestown. The slides shown depicted the colours of the American 'fall'. Mrs Hoskin thanked Mr Snowdon.

Tea and biscuits were served by Lorna Clue and helpers.

Setting up new member society

A new Member Society of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies is in the process of being set up in South East Cornwall.

It is expected that meetings will take place in Liskeard, probably in the evenings. Nationwide there are over 200 Member Societies with a membership in excess of 80,000, and a membership of at least 150 will be needed to make a new Society viable.

NADFAS is a registered charity, with the Duchess of Gloucester as patron. Members participate in the historical perspectives of art history, and grow to understand and relate to such diverse subjects as Palladio to Corbusier, church stained glass to furnishing and fabrics, and William Morris to the arts and crafts movement.

Each Member Society organises a series of nine or ten lectures a year, together with study days and outings both in the UK and abroad. Anyone interested in joining the proposed new Society should contact Dr John Sewart on 01752 516371 or write to him at 25 St George's Road, Saltash, PL12 6EH.

Palace talk

An illustrated talk by Ian Franklin entitled 'Behind the Scenes at Hampton Court Palace' is to be held in Liskeard library on March 7 at 7.30pm, entrance being £1.50.

Donating items for Romania

Liskeard/Looe Inner Wheel met at the Nebula Hotel on February 21 when 15 members attended.

Members agreed to send a card and flowers to Jean Mullen, who was still unwell, and the secretary reported that all invitations had been sent out for the birthday dinner to be held at the Hannafore Point Hotel on March 31.

It was announced that Marie Curie would be looking for anyone to collect at supermarkets later in the year, and that Scope would be seeking collectors at a later date. Thanks were expressed to Carol for setting out the menus for the birthday dinner, and for the meal held at her restaurant, The Grapevine in Looe, in January. Pat Richards is to attend the national conference, and Pat Gurney had put her name forward for second vice for the county. Pat also brought greetings from the Inner Wheel/Rotary club of Nicosia, Cyprus. The district meeting at Hannafore Point Hotel will be held on February 29, when the club will be stewards.

Speakers for the afternoon were Irene Rowan and Wendy McGuire, who work for Scar and showed slides of Romania. They said that in Romania eight or nine people live in room no bigger than an outside shed in this country - with no sanitation. Boxes of hope taken out to them each year are their lifeline. Abandoned babies are now being cared for as Scar pay for a lady to look after them, while baby food and vitamins are always in great need to feed the children. The Inner Wheel ladies support this charity. The speakers were thanked by chairman, Hetty Nicholas, who also thanked the Inner Wheel ladies who had brought baby clothes, baby food and vitamins which will shortly be making their way to Romania.

The next committee meeting will be on March 28 at the Nebula Hotel at 11.30am.

Ray to be the speaker

The women's section of the Royal British Legion met at the branch headquarters recently, when members were told that the speaker next month will be Ray Shaddick of Radio Cornwall.

The president, Christine Pampling, opened the meeting with the exhortation. Members were reminded of the lunch at her home on March 14, and anyone wishing to book should ring 01579 343449.

Raffle winners were Sybil Pomeroy and Barbara Spencer. Tea hostesses for next month will be Kath Worden and Doreen Surridge.

Speaker for the afternoon was Val Pengelly who outlined how she had become a school teacher. She was thanked by chairman, Carol Graves. The afternoon ended with the usual tea and biscuits.

Nicola wants your opinions

Nicola Tooms, a third year student at the University of Plymouth , is calling on local people in the Liskeard area to voice their opinions about the Liskeard Parade.

As part of a project for her final year studying heritage and agriculture, Nicola has been engaged in research on the planning and development of the area, which underwent renovation last Spring.

To conclude her work, she is keen to find out exactly what local people feel about the new Parade.

Nicola said: "I want to hear from anyone, whether it is to confirm how much they love The Parade, or whether they feel a different design would have been more beneficial to Liskeard town centre - for example, more allowances for car parking space."

Anyone wishing to contact Nicola can do so via The Cornish Times who will put you in-touch with her to discuss your opinions.
