Local band release a CD
Popular Liskeard-based band Quincy have released their first CD, entitled 'Big and Clever', on local record label - red ink records.
Quincy, formed in the summer of l997 from the ashes of three bands, feature Dave Bray on guitar and vocals, Matthew Arundell on guitar and vocals, Ed Powles on bass and backing vocals and Rick Stockton on drums.
Quincy, who colour their sound with a variety of contemporary and classic influences, have already attracted the attention of national music industry recording and publishing concerns, and the new local CD release aims to build on that interest. The CD is available in local regional record shops, including The Powerhouse and Phase 2 in Liskeard.
Heading offon Concorde
Sixteen-year-old Josie Gubbins of Liskeard is to head skyward on August 29 with a supersonic flight on Concorde in the company of chart-topping band, 911.
Josie won a telephone competition run for the children's charity, UNICEF to raise money for children in Kosovo. British Airways has donated the Concorde flight, which will take off from London's Heathrow airport for a two and a half hour party in the sky.
Sunny weather for a summer luncheon
After previous weeks of dull and cold weather the sun shone non-stop - and well over 60 people were able to sit out in the gardens of Pill Farm, Saltash - for the summer luncheon of the S E Cornwall Conservative Women's constituency committee.
Muriel Batten, chairman of the constituency committee, and her husband Derek were hosts for the event.
Those who cooked and prepared the food were Sile Beaumont, Muriel Batten, Nancy Gillbard, Dorothy Hall, Marian Limbert, Joan Moffatt, Pat Perrin, Anne Rickarby, Julie Stiff and Honor Williams.
Chairman of the Association, Col A P Hall, attended as did Association president, Bernard Harding, Liskeard South councillor Dawn Austin, and Torpoint town councillor Eddie Andrews.
The door steward was Dorothy Hall, the bar steward was Stephen Austin and Honor Williams and Marian Limbert ran a raffle. Raffle winners were Dot Aitken, Stephen Austin, Arnold Wood, Ruth Marris, Joan Moffatt, Monica Williams, Pam Stephens, Jo Martin, Anne Rickarby, Julie Stiff, Patrick Hall, Jill Joce, Pat Thatcher, Dorothy Hall and John Milne-Home.
President of the Conservative women's constituency committee, Sile Beaumont, thanked all who had attended and presented Muriel Batten with chocolates. Thanks were also expressed to Derek Batten for his hard work in erecting the marquees and preparing the seating.
Insight into a clerk's career
John Evans gave a humorous insight into his career as a clerk to the Royal Courts of Justice when he spoke to members of Liskeard and district group of the U3A.
He was thanked by Betty Swindley who gave a report of a U3A regional conference she had attended with Derek Swindley, Margaret Fletcher and David Glanville.
The next U3A meeting in Liskeard will be on September 1 at l0am in the Long Room, West Street.

Slim Jenny takes up scuba diving
Losing 55 pounds in weight has encouraged Jenny Smirthwaite to take up scuba diving and abseil down Plymouth's Civic Centre building for charity.
Jenny, who attends the Liskeard Weight Watchers meeting, has slimmed from a size 22 to a shapely size 14. She decided to lose weight after visiting Paris and seeing photographs of herself afterwards. She said that before she shed the pounds she didn't even like going to the beach. Now she is looking forward to a university reunion, and skiing in Canada next year.
Contest chance for youth bands
Places are still available at the Youth Rock Band competition which is being organised as part of Dobwalls carnival week.
The carnival week is due to run from August 23-28, the rock band competition to be held during this week in the Memorial Hall in the village. Youth bands in the South East Cornwall area are being encouraged to parade their musical talent for the first prize of £100. Thirty minutes maximum has been allocated for each band and, as places are limited, those musicians wishing to enter are being encouraged to contact the carnival committee as soon as possible. There will be a rehearsal/soundcheck opportunity on the Saturday afternoon.

Arthritis road show in 2000
The Liskeard/Looe Inner Wheel met at the Nebula Hotel when those present included a member from a Norfolk club, Rose Saunders.
The speaker, Melva McQuillen, spoke on Arthritis Care. She said there was now an office in Looe and funding was needed for an Arthritis road show to take place in September 2000.
Last year's president, Barbara Geach, presented Melva with a £150 cheque, money raised during her term of office.
Mrs Nicholas said that baby clothes and food are still urgently needed for Romania, and Mrs Elliot would be travelling there in October.
The fashion show is to be held at the Hannafore Point Hotel on October 27, with three ladies from the club to be models.
The speaker for August was to be Richard Harding, who was due to speak on the Round Britain race.
Cream teas will be held in the garden of Christine Pampling's home on September 7.
