LISKEARD is being unlocked to give people a chance to see parts of the town that are normally hidden.
The town is playing its part in the national Heritage Open Days event - which gives people access to historic sites normally closed to the public - by launching Liskeard Unlocked from September 7 to 10.
And to tempt people to get involved, there’s a quirky exhibition of pictures of some of the doors to be thrown open.
At Stuart House and Liskeard Methodist Church, in the lead-up to Liskeard Unlocked, you can test your knowledge at the display of lots of pictures of doors of properties around the town to try to identify, with a flap to lift below giving the answer and some interesting facts. It’s designed to appeal to all ages.
The exhibition continues at Stuart House today and tomorrow (September 1 and 2) from 9;.30am to 3.30pm today and 9.30am-12.30pm tomorrow.
It’s then open from September 4 to 9 in the mornings at the Methodist Church.
Liskeard Unlocked kicks off on the evening of Thursday, September 7 with a free evening heritage walk around the town starting from Liskeard and District Museum.
Guide Brian Oldham will stop outside the buildings being opened as part of the Heritage Open Days event to reveal some of their stories.
The walk will start at The Museum on Pike Street at 6.30pm and finish at the Eliot House Hotel, Castle Street approximately an hour and a half later.
When the walk reaches the Eliot House Hotel St Martin’s Church will have exhibition bell ringing by the Devon Call Change Ringers to welcome the walkers.
On Saturday, September 8 (10am - 3pm), an information hub will be open at the Town Council gazebo on The Parade, signposting all the buildings open for free as part of the Heritage Open Days event.
It will also have a Cornish language activity for adults and children can try and a special children’s trail to follow around the buildings. An Eye Spy Quiz is available from The Hub, the Tourist Information Centre and many properties taking part.Note that, unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Cornish Times' Webb's House offices will not now be opening on Friday morning as part of Liskeard Unlocked. However, we hope to take part in next year's open days.
