CORNWALL LEAGUE
DIVISION THREE
Liskeard Tigers 38
Lastonets 17
Liskeard Tigers clinched promotion to Cornwall League Division Two thanks to a fantastic display of netball in their last game of the campaign.
Storm had already been promoted as champions, so the second place was between the Tigers and Lastonet II.
Liskeard captain Amie Hoskin gave her team a strong team talk to try and settle the nerves, which obviously worked as the Tigers took control, scoring seven goals to Lastonets' one.
Judith Grayston started for the Tigers in wing defence (WD) and was quick to pick up their defensive patterns and work with goal defence (GD) Holly Lemon to restrict the goal attack (GA) in the final third.
Lemon took a knock in the second quarter following a well-timed interception but battled on as the Tigers took a 15-8 lead into half-time.
Liskeard made one change to their starting line-up and brought Lauren Finch off the bench.
Turnovers in the mid-court from Jo Glossop, fed quickly through wing attack (WA) Amie Hoskin into the shooting circle, put the game beyond Lastonet's reach.
Superb shooting by Kirstie Chappell and player-coach Sophie Hocking saw Liskeard convert 16 goals in the quarter to secure the win.
However, in order to secure promotion, the Tigers needed to ensure Lastonet did not reach half of their total, so there was still work to be done.
Goalkeeper Lucy Smale restricted the movement and pressurising every shot, and was awarded Player-of-the-Match for her hard defensive work. The final score was 38-17 to the Tigers, giving them all five points and meaning they join Division Two for the next campaign.
A special mention should also go to Tigers' 'eighth' player – their club members, family and friends, whose vocal support on the night pushed the team through.
