THE final phase of the huge development plan for Liskeard school and community college, which has seen the previously split school united on to the one site, has finally been given the go-ahead.
The plan, for a two storey rear extension to provide science rooms, eight classrooms, food and textiles and computer aided design and technology areas, and a new vehicular access and car parking off Coldstyle Road, had previously been deferred to clarify the views of Caradon district council.
This week the county's development control committee gave their approval to the scheme, which also includes a coach park for 11 vehicles with access from Callington Road. The new car park would lie around 15 metres north of nearby dwelling 'Gwel an Hallow', beyond a Cornish hedge. The ground floor of the building, at l,900 sq metres, will accommodate two woodwork areas; two metalwork areas; two textiles areas; two food areas; a preparation room; 14 small stores; toilets; two computer aided design areas; and six classrooms. The first floor will comprise 14 science rooms with associated stores; two classrooms; two stores; toilets; a preparation room; and a science department base.
Local county councillor, Mike Gillbard, fully supported the scheme, although aware of local concerns regarding car parking. The officers' report said he was satisfied vehicle movements along Coldstyle Road will be minimal.
The officers said as there will be no increase in the number of pupils due to the proposal there would be no associated potential additional traffic movements. It was felt extra staff car parking, with access off Coldstyle Road, and additional coach parking at the existing school entrance, will help alleviate current traffic problems associated with the school.
The officers concluded that the extension 'as the final development on the premises' was an acceptable addition to the school. Its impact on residential property is considered to be within reasonable limits.
