Liskeard Mayor Councillor Roger Holmes has played a pivotal role in helping with the rescue operation for the town's country fayre which had been threatened with cancellation due to lack of interest.

He is to personally undertake the organisation of field sports and musical events to take place at the fayre which will now go ahead for one day only, on Sunday, July 30, in the grounds of Liskeard School and Community College.

'I am disappointed the event will only be for one day but I am hopeful for its expansion again in future years' he said. 'People have put a lot of hard work into this over the past two years and I am determined to see it successfully remain on the town's annual calendar of events'.

The mayor wants to hear from local Young Farmers Clubs and Women's Institutes, and has been making contacts with the Cornish Wrestling Association, and hopes to bring over wrestlers and other sports teams from Brittany.

Event chairman is Les Broan who was instigator of the fayre after the loss of the Merrymeet Traction Rally. 'I am relieved the fayre is back on the road and I am delighted with the mayor's practical backing and the other offers of help that have come forward' he said.

The day will begin at 10am ending at 6pm with Mr Broan in charge of the steam and vintage section of which he is an avid enthusiast. Graham Prout and Ivor Sanders from St Cleer will again be providing the popular tractor and trailer rides from the school down through the town, but it has been emphasised that the elderly in the town's various homes and retirement establishments will have the first priority. 'It will be a chance for many of our senior citizens to see the improvements in the town centre for the first time' he said. Traction engines will also be rumbling through the town and the Olympic Radio Roadshow from Plymouth will be providing some music, with the hoped for addition of some youth rock music. There will be stalls around the grounds, various entertainments from local organisations and a craft fayre in the school's old hall.

Anyone who would like to be involved in the fayre can contact Mr Broan on 01579 344128 or are welcome to contact the mayor through the clerk's office at the Public Hall in West Street or tel 01579 325407.
