SOUTH East Cornwall's MP Colin Breed was the special guest at a party to mark two centuries of banking in Liskeard. A cake was cut by Mr Breed at Barclays to honour 200 years of financial service in the town. Barclays traces its history in Liskeard to the opening of the first branch of Robins, Foster, Coode and Bolitho (East Cornwall Bank) on August 10, 1807. Following a series of regional mergers during the latter part of the 20th century, the Liskeard branch became part of the Consolidated Bank of Cornwall. In 1905, this bank merged with Barclay and Company Limited. As well as being a busy branch, Liskeard was also responsible for the supervision of five sub-branches. Callington opened in 1830, Looe in 1866 and Polperro in 1902. Torpoint opened on March 2, 1902, but did not come under Liskeard supervision until 1992. St Germans, which opened in 1911 or 1912, closed in 1939. Throughout much of its history, the Liskeard branch has been on The Parade, as it continues to be today. Premises register entries track the site of the branch and the names of the freeholders for the site as far back as July 20, 1662.
