Liskeard’s Carnival Week got off to a competitive and colourful start with bingo and a children’s pavement art competition.
More than 100 people were there for eyes down on Tuesday evening and around 40 children had taken part in the creative contest earlier in the day, making a difficult task for the mayor, who was judging the entries.
It was also the moment to crown Liskeard’s Carnival Royalty for 2018, and outgoing carnival queen Elizabeth Mae Caers was delighted to pass the title to Freya Davey, whose attendants will be Willow Tubritt and Jessica Santilo.
New crowns for the three girls were provided by Sam and Andy Joryeff, the parents of outgoing princesses May and Lauren Wiliams.
On Wednesday Liskeard’s Silver Band led the Furry Dance through the town.
Band members were in jubilant mood having raised much more than originally anticipated - almost £1000 - for new instruments during a marathon playing session recently in the town centre.
The week will come to a head tomorrow (Saturday 23) with the Grand Carnival Parade.
Participants should assemble from 5pm in the Cattle Market of judging at 6pm, and the procession will set off at 6.30pm.
