LISKEARD Lions' successful carnival week ended on Saturday with a grand parade of bands, floats and walkers in fancy dress, watched by a large crowd enjoying a dry spell among the showers.

Treasurer John Gliddon reports the street collection, taken by members in Lions' costumes and helpers, reached £600, to help offset the cost of the parade.

The procession in the town centre was led by two magnificent shire horses, owned by Mike Elford (Looe), who pulled a carriage with Lions president Allan Mawby on board, together with his wife Paula, and Liskeard mayor Tony Powell.

Heading up the rest of the parade were Liskeard Silver Band, and the carnival queen Chloe Marshall with her attendants Emily Marshall and Kenza Jay. The Saltash Lions May Fair Queen was also in attendance.

They were joined by Liskeard-based Kernow Samba and also the Tavistock Twirlers, the City of Plymouth Pipes and Drums, Bideford Youth Pipe Band and Liskerrett Street Band.

The best entry in the carnival, judged by Nicky Harwood, and winners of the Lions Shield were the Liskerrett Centre with The Jewel in the Crown.

Mr Gliddon said it had been an enjoyable evening for the town and thanked all those who had helped the Lions with marshalling, St John Ambulance, the Fire Brigade, and everyone who had taken part in the parade.
