LISKEARD is all set for a fabulous fireworks display – and it is all thanks to volunteers who have stepped in to keep the event going.

The annual Bonfire Night display at the rugby training pitch is a popular highlight for families locally.

The Round Table had always organised the event, but when the Liskeard and Looe branch disbanded earlier this year, its future looked uncertain.

The event has now been taken on by the Lions Club of Liskeard, who said they were determined not to allow the fireworks to fizzle out.

‘We had a meeting with the former chairman of the Round Table, James Barnett, and he was extremely passionate about keeping the event going in Liskeard,’ said Garf Cole, who is president of the Lions.

‘We put it to the club and members were very supportive of putting it on, as we do with other traditional events such as St Matthew’s Fair and the Carnival.

‘The club decided that it would fund and man the Fireworks Display.

‘The Round Table have assisted us throughout and they will also be helping us with manpower on the evening.’

The 2018 fireworks will be provided, as in previous years, by James Moynan of Shockwaves Pyrotechnics. The Lions are encouraging as many people as possible to attend the event and support the club’s catering van, which will be there on the night.

Weather permitting, there will be parking on the nearby Liskeard Cricket Club ground, which will help to ease the issue of parking for the display.

‘We’ve decided we’ll give it a go this year, basically it’s a trial event and we’ll review it and decide if we want to carry on,’ said Mr Cole.

‘I feel so strongly, and so do the Lions, that we need to support our local groups and our local area – and in turn, people need to come out and support us.’

Liskeard’s Fireworks Display will take place on Bonfire Night – Monday, November 5 – at the Liskeard Rugby Club training pitch off Coldstyle Road.

Gates will open at 6.15pm for the display at 7pm.
