With just a few weeks left before New Year's Eve, the pressure is on to find a special way to welcome in the new Millennium. But with the Dome reserved for the rich, famous or lucky, many of us are facing the prospect of an expensive night out or an evening watching the same old thing on TV.
So why not try something completely different, something to make the last night of the Millennium truly memorable? The Festival of Winter Walks, organised by the Ramblers' Association and supported by outdoor retailer Millets, includes a number of walks timed to see in the New Year.
In fact there are more than 400 walks scheduled throughout England, Scotland and Wales from Boxing Day to 2 January, so those who already have plans for New Year's Eve don't have to miss out on the fun.
Most of the routes are between four and seven miles. Longer ones are generally arranged in a figure of eight format so that walkers can stay for either the whole day or half a day. All walks are free, and everyone is welcome.
We are expecting up to 13,000 people to join us for this year's Festival. So come along, walk off some of that Christmas pud and make a healthy start to the new Millennium.
For a full list of walks call the Ramblers' Association on 020 7339 8500, send a large SAE to 1-5 Wandsworth Road, London SW8 2XX or check out our website at http://www.ramblers.org.uk">www.ramblers.org.uk.
