Concerning Mrs Jaycock's cri de coeur over the Pound Street crossing, may I start by expressing the Town Council's sympathy with her and others.

There is, of course, a Schools Crossings Officer there at certain times, between the Fountain and Barclays' Bank, which, I suggest, is a safer place to cross than the top of Pound Street.

Nevertheless, this matter was raised forcefully with Peter Moore of the CCC Highways Department who has played a major role in redesigning the town centre. I should like to be able to report that he understood the issue and would do something about it.

However, I regret to report that his manner suggests otherwise.

The new layout is supposed to reverse the dominance of motor traffic over pedestrians but, in this part, at least, fails dismally .

We will just have to keep up the pressure until action is taken, hoping this is before a nasty accident happens.
