In answer to your unnamed correspondent last week who commented on non-payers of Council Tax, I would say that first of all I am sorry that he/she feels aggrieved at the treatment received from Caradon District Council staff. The fact that a letter was received quickly when a payment was not made on time shows that a structure is in place to ensure that payments are made.

In fact there are a whole series of methods for recovering non-payments whether they be council tax, rents or overpaid housing benefit. The council is restricted in publishing the names of non-payers by the Data Protection Act. People who do not pay their debts are of course making others pay for them. We all feel that our money could be used to better effect but we need to look around our area to see what the money is spent on. When the demand for next year's council tax is sent out it is usually accompanied by an explanation of where the money is spent. Contact your local councillor if you want more information about this.
