THE question I ask myself is who are the pavements there for these days? As a keen dog walker I am very often having to stand aside in fear of being knocked over by either a bicycle being ridden on the path or by skateboarders. Also as a responsible dog owner I never leave home without having several bags in hand, or pockets bulging with same, to pick up after my dog. Unfortunately there will always be the few who think that they are beyond any thought of responsibility and so give the rest of us a bad name. On the evening of Monday, August 15, I was walking along Callington Road in Saltash towards the traffic lights and on the righthand pavement just before Taylor Road some very thoughtless person had walked, or ridden a horse along the pavement. The horse had left its calling card for practically the whole length of path in front of the properties there. This meant I had to either tiptoe through it plus steer my dog through it or put my safety at risk and walk in the road. I didn't relish the thought of the latter because many motorists treat the road from the traffic lights at Burraton to the mini-roundabout at Pilmere Estate like a race track, far exceeding the speed limit for a built-up area. After some consideration and a lot of sheer non- understanding of some people's thoughtlessness I negotiated my way through. If I allowed my dog to foul the pavements and made no attempt to clean it up, the chances are I would be fined if I was caught. I crossed along the same path today, Thursday, August 18, and to by disbelief it is still in the same state as Monday. What attempt has, whoever was responsible, made to clean up after their animal? I am an able-bodied person quite able to manage such situations but for someone who is partially sighted or for someone pushing a push chair, there is no easy alternative. Please can we start showing a little bit more respect to our fellow residents of Saltash and surrounding areas. I'm not usually the type of person to kick up a fuss but this upset me to the point of having my say and airing my views. I hope others take it on board.
