SALTASH man Lee Beer will try to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money for the second Saltash scout group. Lee, 34, has been training for the climb on Dartmoor and had recently climbed Snowdon in Wales. Lee has lived in Saltash all his life and was a cub with the Saltash pack when Joy Nodder was the Cub leader. He made a new year's resolution to raise some money for a local charity and chose the Scout group. The climb will take place in February next year and he will join a group of 12 people. The feat will involve six days of trekking for approximately eight hours a day. The final summit day will begin at midnight and take about 13 to 15 hours to reach the summit at 19,340ft. They will have to endure many climate changes en- route including African plains and jungle, on to open moorland, and then through arctic desert before hitting the summit where the temperature can fall as low as 30 degrees centigrade. At present Lee is training hard by walking on the moors, cycling etc to keep fit for the challenge. Anyone wanting to sponsor Lee or give a donation can call (01752) 847783 or (07967) 440098
