St Barnabas Hospital League of Friends' annual meeting was held at the hospital on Thursday evening. Mayor Bob Austin thanked the Friends for all they had been doing to raise money for the hospital. Treasurer Peter Gammage gave a report and said that £810 had been given to the hospital funds by chairman Mona Tomaszeska-Honywill through donations instead of gifts for her 80th birthday. During the past year the League of Friends has provided two telephone trolleys for hospital patients' use and also blinds for the nursing station windows. President of the League of Friends, William Gall, said it had been a difficult year, as the staff doctor who started work in May has been on compassionate leave for three months and it was unclear when he would resume his duties. Doctors from the surgery next door have been covering the medical duties at the hospital during the period, so work at the hospital was able to continue. Dr Stuart Hateley, a GP from Plymouth who is also a response Doctor, was the guest speaker and described some of his duties in the immediate care service. A buffet supper concluded the meeting.
