This week’s Cornish Times, on sale from today (Friday), leads with the news that a long-planned flood defence scheme for Looe – which has been dubbed ‘the most flooded town in the UK’ – is set to be given £2.3m in funding from Cornwall Council.
We reveal what this money will be used for and report the reaction of people in the town.
Other projects have also been earmarked for council funding – including planned cycle and walking trails linking Liskeard and Looe and Looe with Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula, the project to transform Liskeard’s cattle market site, a proposed ferry service linking Saltash with Torpoint and Rame, and a project to restore Cornish hedges.
Meanwhile, mean from Polperro have banded together to clear a sea pool of boulders – we have pictures and the full story.
South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray is set to marry her long-term partner, Bob Davidson, tomorrow, but the ongoing debates over Brexit mean the honeymoon will be delayed – and Mr Murray also tells use about the difficult decision she has made to change tack and back Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal. We also report on the hundreds from Cornwall who went to the capital to join the ‘People’s Vote’ march.
Those who watch their television via Freeview in our area will have some retuning to do – find out why. Also one South East Cornwall town is planning a ban on new second homes.
We also have two pages of pictures of the youngsters who took part in the Quethiock Cross-Country Race, and more pictures of how the tricky job was accomplished of removing the bells from a Tamar Valley church for refurbishment.
With many people in our area becoming concerned about green issues, we have reports on action to make urban spaces better for wildlife, recycling of garden waste, the decline of pollinating insects in Britain, ways to stop plastic waste reaching the sea, how you can volunteer for a wildlife survey, and how to create a min-pond in your garden to encourage insects and wildlife.
We have more pictures by Ray Roberts in his latest Nature Watch feature and we also have regular columns like your Letters, TV Choice, Recipe of the Week and Farming, as well as pages of you community and events pictures and stories.
This week’s edition also has nine pages of sport from around the area, leading with the news that Saltash United are through to their second cup final of the season after a 5-1 victory over Elburton Villa.
