In this week’s packed Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with the story of how an alert neighbour and a quick-thinking police officer saved a pensioner from handing over his life savings to a scammer purporting to be from the Serious Fraud Squad.

Unfortunately, as we report, some other pensioners in South East Cornwall were not so lucky in being saved from the fraudsters.

We also have the story behind the scarecrow policeman and homemade signs that frustrated residents of St Ive have employed to try and get motorists to stick to the 30mph limit through their community that, they say, is frequently ignored.

Meanwhile drivers passing through Gunnislake are going to be asked to switch off their engines while waiting at the village centre traffic lights in a bid to improve air quality.

South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray tells us why she’s relishing ‘a new spirit of optimism after the appointment of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister. She also tells us about a tour of Ethy Woods that she undertook with National Trust personnel to learn about the effects of climate change.

Meanwhile, a town trust in Looe has installed a seafront refill station for water bottles to help reduce plastic waste in our seas.

Twelve friends have raised thousands of pounds while undertaking a Bristol to Land’s End cycle ride in memory of a South East Cornwall man who died at just 22 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. We have a special feature highlighting how a pre-school teacher and a mum have both had their long locks cut off to help good causes, and there is an invitation to join a charity head shave Guinness World Record attempt.

We report on further good news for the Cornwall Air Ambulance New Heli Appeal, with the awarding of a Government grant of more than £1m and proceeds from a fundraising dinner held near Polruan that amounted to £16,000.

Meanwhile the people of Liskeard have been saying a fond farewell to Methodist minster the Rev Mark Pengelly. We have pictures and a tribute to his time in the town.

We also have four pages of school prom pictures showing the district’s secondary school leavers in their glamorous finery, plus special big pictures of Pensilva Primary and Dobwalls Primary school leavers marking their departure for the next stage of their education.

There are more pages of colourful pictures showing action and race winners at Looe Regatta, the celebrations marking a successful first year of the Old Sardine Factory in Looe, Cornwall College Saltash student awards, Pelynt village fair and of the impressive costumes worn by participants in Lostwithiel Carnival. There is also a special feature on successful Liskeard business Angie’s Barber Shop, and a special Out and About section of things for families to do in the school holidays.

As well as our regular columns like Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, your Letters, TV Choice and latest Books, this week’s edition has seven pages of Sport plus Farming, Leisure, Antiques, Property, Homes and Gardens and Motoring sections.
