In this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with the news that Looe’s gig rowers have been crowned champions in the Isles of Scilly for the second year running after competing in the World Pilot Gig Championships.

We have pictures of them receiving the renowned barrel trophy and also about how their home town is celebrating their victory. However, there is also news about how the event will be changing next year due to the pressures that the current numbers attending put on the host island of St Mary’s.

We report that a life-saving mobile app for epilepsy sufferers that was first launched with fundraising in Liskeard has now received its third national award from the British Medical Journal, and also have pictures of community stalwarts from around South East Cornwall who have received British Empire Medals from the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.

Following the recent Extinction Rebellion protests in London participated in by people from this area, reporter Kerenza Moore has written a special report highlighting the different points of view on the issue of climate change.

Meanwhile, the National Trust aims to plant dozens of new orchards around the country to safeguard heritage varieties of apple like those found in the Tamar Valley, and Liskeard Town Council has spoken out about developers of new housing estates changing details of their plans after permission in principe.

A Scout group has shown its defiance and has started raising money for new security measures after a vandal attack on its hut, and the project on the Rame Peninsula to rebuild a fire-gutted pub for community use is making progress – we have pictures of the cliff stabilisation works needed.
