In this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with the news that a new tourist attraction concerning the history of the scenic Looe Valley Line is on track after gaining a £40,000 grant from train operating company GWR.

A heritage centre is to be set up in buildings on the Looe line platform at Liskeard station and hopes are high that it will open next Easter.

We also report that South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray has made a call in Parliament for funding to be assured for a flood protection scheme for Looe, as she fears that flooding from rising sea levels may put the town’s future in jeopardy in years to come.

Meanwhile, people from the area who took part in the Extinction Rebellion protests in the capital tell us about their experiences – they believe they saw a shift happening in public opinion.

We outline which candidates the various political parties have put forward to stand as MEPs in the forthcoming European Parliament elections if the UK fails to leave the EU by the May 23 election date.

We also feature previously unseen photographs from a collection of personal letters written by author Daphne du Maurier to a friend that are to be auctioned tomorrow. They include a picture of the Queen and Prince Philip relaxing in the grounds of the author’s Menabilly home near Fowey.

We also feature an old set of photographs showing proceedings of Liskeard’s historic Court Leet ceremony back in 1986.

A Saltash dad will be running in the Plymouth half-marathon to raise awareness of the rare medical condition that his young daughter suffers from, and a Liskeard dental therapist and her daughter are heading to North Africa to bring emergency dental care to children there. Meanwhile a Liskeard poet’s work has won praise from a judging panel headed by broadcaster and former BBC war correspondent Kate Adie.

We also report that a local church is seeking to raise £180,000 to refurbish and extend its set of bells, a community transport service needs volunteer drivers and Looe RNLI volunteers had an exceptionally busy Easter Sunday carrying out rescues.

As well as lots of your community news and pictures, this week’s edition also features a 12-page property pull-out, previews of the West Looe and Saltash May Fairs, seven pages of Sport, and our regular columns including Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, Letters, Recipe of the Week, TV Choice and latest Books.

There is all this and more in this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday).
