In this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with the news that the eyesore concrete ‘bridge to nowhere’, originally built to link two residential developments in Liskeard but never completed, is now to be demolished and replaced with a new pedestrian route. We report on local people’s reactions to the news.

There is now a rather prettier ‘bridge to nowhere’ in South East Cornwall after a motorist collided with and damaged the Grade I-listed, 16th-century Newbridge across the Tamar at Gunnislake. We look at why repairs are going to take some time, leaving motorists with long diversions to reach Tavistock and the rest of West Devon.

Meanwhile, much further downstream, there is going to be another reduction in service on the Torpoint ferry while one of the vessels is away in Falmouth for a refit.

We also report on the background to the shocking death of a young child in Liskeard that has led to her mother’s boyfriend being jailed for her murder and her mother being given a shorter jail term for allowing the death of a child.

We have photographs from many of the community events around South East Cornwall, including a showcase of local groups in Liskeard and a Rame village’s unique art display that turned it into a ‘Window Wonderland’. We also have pictures of two young primary pupils who just keep on running to help raise funds for special class activities, and from a tour of the capital’s historic sites made by a party of Duchy College students.

With cinema audiences around the region recently enjoying the new Fisherman’s Friends movie, we report that the real sea shanties group will be performing at the Looe Live! festival in September.

In this week’s four-page Farming section we also have pictures from an award ceremony for Cornwall’s top farmers and more from an event where Cornish youngsters learnt about where their food comes from.

In addition we have our regular Nature Watch feature from photographer Ray Roberts and other regular columns like your Letters, TV Choice, Books and Recipe of the Week, plus nine pages of sport.
