A multi-million pound retail development in Liskeard has moved a step closer with the publication of a final study into plans for the cattle market.

It reaches the conclusion that the best way forward is to redevelop the site to include one large store with complementary smaller shops, offices and other workspaces, and a new town square for events and markets.

This option would mean the cattle market, run by Kivells, would be moved away from the site with Tencreek Farm mentioned as a possible location.

The study, undertaken jointly by Liskeard Town Council and landowners Cornwall Council through an independent consultant, explored six different options for the site ranging from leaving it as it is to a comprehensive redevelopment.

Town mayor Tony Powell said: 'We have a real opportunity, together with the other proposals we will be bringing forward – which include a town centre pannier market – to change the economic face of our town but at the same time retain its unique character.

'We have just had "Liskeard Lights Up" and I now sincerely hope we can have "Liskeard Lifts Off".'

Cllr Powell confirmed that developers are already speaking to retailers about the potential scheme.
