The Ashes put on their best performance of the season for this game against Bodmin. Nathan Blarney was the first player to show a sign of things to come when his first shot on goal from long range only just sailed over the crossbar.
Saltash's new signing Nick Griffiths saw his shot go wide and Lee Burns attempt was well saved by Paul Collin. In the 18th minute the referee awarded a penalty to Bodmin after John May was supposedly fouled by Griffiths but May didn't trouble Charles West in goal as his spot kick went well wide.
Only a minute later Mike Southgate hit Bodmin's upright and Mat Penry's effort went wide. However Southgate put Saltash ahead in the 23rd minute when he lobbed the advancing keeper. An excellent crossfield pass from Penry found Matt Latham who volleyed home just sixty seconds later to put the Ashes turther ahead.
Just before half-time Bodmin pulled a goal back from a free kick. Taken by May he found Darren Clatworthy who headed home at the near post. Bodmin's keeper was unlucky on the stroke of half time when he collided with the upright and took a bang to the head, but he was able to continue playing.
Five minutes into the second half Saltash increased their lead when Southgate's cross from the right wing found Penry who volleyed home from 12 yards. In the 68th minute Luke Hurlock hit the base of the upright before Matt Latham made the most of an error by the Bodmin keeper and he made it 4-1 with a tremendous 20 yard volley. The 71st minute saw Penry and Southgate combine well before the latter made it 5-1. Bodmin pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when a left wing cross from Darren Burden found Clatworthy who shot home from close range.
However the Ashes weren't finished as Penry volleyed home his second from 25 yards to give a final scoreline of 6-2. His fine all round performance saw him deservedly named as man of the match'.
