After a disappointing game at Launceston in the previous week Saltash showed much more committment against Penzance.
For much of the first half Ashes dominated the play, going ahead in the 17th minute through Phil Garland - his first goal since joining Saltash. A mistake in the Penzance defence led to the Ashes second goal in the 21st minute with Mike Southgate sliding the ball past Dennis Annear in goal for Penzance.
Southgate went close three minutes later but his header from a fine cross by Phil Garland went straight to Annear. On the half hour Matt Latham's long range shot went just wide and nine minutes later Eddie Shapland was also just wide. James Vercesi's right wing cross just before half time went straight to Charles West in a rare attack on the Ashes goal.
Penzance put up a better fight in the second half with Colin Payne's shot going just over the crossbar at the start. In the 51st minute Saltash's Andy David suffered a head injury after colliding with Charles West and Ashes were forced to substitute him, sending on new signing Chris Nicholls. Saltash's third goal came in the 62nd minute when Mike Southgate's pass went to Mark Courts who volleyed home for his first goal of the season.
Southgate continued to cause problems for the Penzance defence even sending a shot only just wide of its target despite having three defenders around him. Penzance rallied twoards the end with shots coming from James and Mark Vercesi but neither really troubled Saltash.
