The fact that this game took place at all was a credit to the handful of people who worked hard from first light to get the rain sodden pitch into order. Leading the way was captain Nathan Hicks who worked from 7.00am to help prepare the surface and his work was rewarded when his young side gained revenge for the boxing day 1-0 defeat with an impressive victory.
Town managers Ian Southcott and Jon Hake have been building a new young and predominantly local side and the players have risen to the occasion. One of the six teenagers in the starting line up, Peter Southcott, had a shot cleared off the line early on but another, Matt Hawke, did better on 15 minutes. Gary Smith floated a corner in and the young defender rose salmon-like to head powerfully past Newquay keeper Steve Gill for the opener.
The visitors, who entered this match on the back of three straight victories, stepped up a gear and put the Town defence under pressure for the rest of the half, but to no avail.
The second period saw Callington back on top as they created numerous chances.
With 20 minutes to go, experienced striker Paul Webber slid the ball past the advancing Gill for Town's second.
After the game, Ian Southcott was full of praise for his players for the way they battled through the game to the final whistle, and to the ground staff for performing miracles to get the game on, a point echoed by the visitors despite the loss.
