Is this Cornish silverware the oldest 20-20 cricket trophy in the world?

The Isaac Foot Cup dates back to 1928 and has been played for every year since, with a short break before and during the Second World War.

Now Callington club cricketer Spencer Ham is overseeing preparations for this year’s tournament, which starts with a preliminary round between Lanhydrock and Saltash on Thursday, May 26. Matches continue throughout June, starting on June 2 when Liskeard and St Neot meet. All games are played at Callington’s ground.

Spencer said: ‘I don’t know of an older trophy for a tournament in which teams play 20 overs each, though 20-over cricket has been around for a long time, of course. But is this the oldest trophy awarded for 20-20? I’d love to know.’

The trophy was given into the care of his local club at Callington by politician, lawyer and benefactor Isaac Foot who was the father of former Labour leader Michael Foot and founder of a Cornish dynasty which included the diplomat Lord Caradon and the journalists Paul and Sarah Foot.

The club has cared for Isaac Foot’s trophy since 1928, and Spencer is hoping a surge in interest following England’s 20-20 exploits will keep interest in the tournament high.

Isaac Foot Cup Finals Day, featuring two semis and the final, is at Callington Cricket Club on July 10 (reserve date July 24).

Spencer lifted the Isaac Foot Cup when he captained Callington III to victory in 2002. Previous winners have included Callington County School, Banks and Office’, Stoke Climsland, Pensilva, Gunnislake, Werrington, Landulph, Liskeard, Launceston, Luckett and Boconnoc.
