British Transport Police officers are appealing for witnesses and information after the train suffered damage on Sunday, December 22, after striking a tyre which is believed to have been deliberately placed on the track.
At about 1.20pm the Intercity 125 train was travelling from Plymouth towards Penzance when it struck the large tyre between Menheniot and Liskeard.
Investigating officer DC Dave Bailey said: 'The driver of First Great Western's 8.57am London Paddington to Penzance service reported striking the lorry tyre which was on the line. He brought the train to a halt and, although the train suffered some damage, he was able to continue after a delay of around 30 minutes.
'Thankfully no one was injured but this could have resulted in a much more serious incident.
'Placing objects on the railway line is an extremely dangerous act and could result in serious consequences.
'It is only through good fortune that no one was harmed and it is vital that we trace whoever is responsible for this foolish act.'
