A student was inspired by a first aid course to pursue a career in the ambulance service.
Kevin Oak, a campus support assistant from Cornwall College Saltash, decided to try for a his change of career after completing a First Aid at Work course.
And now he’s leaving the College to take up his new job as an emergency care assistant.
‘After completely the first aid course at work it made me realise I wanted to focus on helping others,’ said Kevin.
‘The training was excellent and really gave me the interest to learn more.
‘I will be driving ambulances, assisting the paramedic once on scene and taking patients into hospital and doing the handover.’
For the last six months Kevin has been a voluntary First Responder in the Saltash area with the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, providing instant back-up in response to an emergency until paramedics arrive on the scene.
