THIS week’s edition of the Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we focus on the many commemorations held by communities across South East Cornwall to mark the centenary of the 1918 Armistice ending the First World War.
Our coverage includes many pictures from these events – such as Looe’s Pages of the Sea portrait in the sand event masterminded by movie director Danny Boyle – as well as stories of the sacrifices made by those from the local area who fought in the conflict.
In other news, tonight and over this weekend Looe is hosting its fifth literary festival, including a talk by a Polperro woman whose book about a family crisis that led to a 630-mile walk around the South West Coast Path is on this year’s Sunday Times best sellers list, and a lecture on another important centenary being marked this year: the battle for achieving votes for women.
Children and adults in Saltash are to stage a music production marking the same anniversary and telling the story of the Suffragette movement.
A local school has used a cookery class for students, staff and parents as a forum for airing ideas to improve life at the school, and we have pictures from a couple’s novel Halloween-themed wedding.
Meanwhile a St Neot-based choir has star-billing in a specially written music and narrative production celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Golden Globe Yacht Race – it is to be performed this month at the National Maritime Museum Falmouth.
We have a feature highlighting the dangers and signs of sepsis, as well as regular weekly columns such as Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, TV Choice, the Cornish Times recipe, latest books and ideas for the festive season.
There is all this and more in this week’s Cornish Times.
