OVERNIGHT cover at three minor injury units will stop from the beginning of June. The minor injury units at Liskeard, Launceston and Bodmin hospitals will no longer have 24-hour cover after a decision by the North and East Primary Care Trust this week. Coverage in Saltash will increase by two hours a day with new timings of 8am to 10pm. The decision came at the end of a four-month consultation period that started last year. Meetings were held in the five towns in which the hospitals are based and also in Looe following a request from the public. 'The Professional Executive Committee and the Primary Care Trust Board considered each of the minor injury units individually, taking into account the comments made during the consultation,' Dr Jon Tilbury, Gunnislake GP and chair of the Professional Executive Committee said. 'By reducing the night time opening hours, the highly skilled staff in the minor injury units will be used more effectively when the units are at their busiest, ie during the day and at weekends.' Minor injuries coverage will now be supplied through a combination of Emergency Care Practitioners (who provide help in patient's homes), NHS Direct and Serco, the new out of hours health provider. The closures will save the trust an estimated £80,000 a year. Of that amount £55,000 will be reinvested back into the hospitals. Part of the money will go towards a weekend X-ray facility at both Liskeard and Launceston hospitals. As a result of this facility, the trust estimates that at least 60 people a week will not have to travel into a main accident and emergency department on a Saturday or a Sunday.
