LIGHTING the Royal Albert Bridge, a firework display, activities on Brunel Green, a shop window competition and a musical show about Brunel. They are some of the suggestions on how Saltash should celebrate the 200th anniversary of Isambar Kingdom Brunel's birth next April. The ideas were given at a public meeting in Saltash Guildhall, when deputy mayor, councillor Joe Ellison, became chairman of a new 'Brunel 200, Saltash' committee. One suggestion came by letter from Devon suggesting a sculpture on a floating pontoon in the middle of the river. Others felt the Royal Albert Bridge needed painting before the event. Saltash station building could be masked and paintings surrounding the building might be a good idea. As a week of celebrations had been held in 1959 for the centenary of the Royal Albert Bridge, it was suggested that the 2006 celebrations might also last a week. People felt that Brunel's bust, which is hidden by bushes, could be brought forward and councillor Ellison explained this had already been suggested and the cost would be about £7,000. All these suggestions will be considered at the next meeting of the Brunel 200, Saltash committee on Tuesday, June 28, and further ideas will be welcomed.
