THERE have been delays and confusion for motorists in Liskeard this week after one of the main roads into the town centre was closed.

Castle Street will remain shut to traffic until October 4 as contractors Wales and West Utilities carry out gas main work and Cable and Wireless undertake ducting work.

A long diversion is in place using Charter Way and Callington Road, with significant delays at peak times.

There was confusion as many drivers trying to get into the town centre drove past diversion signs on Plymouth Road, only to encounter the road closure. Unsure of where to go, some then used Church Street to try to get to the town centre, encountering the one way system and roadworks. Some were stopping pedestrians and asking: 'How do we get to the town centre?'

A spokesman for Wales and West Utilities said: 'We started work this week in Castle Street carrying out an essential gas mains replacement scheme to improve the local gas supply for residents and businesses.

'To ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and our workforce, we have agreed with the local authority highways department to close Castle Street for the four-week planned duration of our work.

'Access to local businesses and traders will continue and we assure everyone that we will be working to complete the scheme as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.'

Western National says the 573/574 buses are unable to serve Castle Street and Plymouth Road and that passengers should use the Parade stops instead.
