Homes now taking shape in East Taphouse, near Liskeard, are being heralded as one of the major answers to the affordable housing problem. The £615,000 scheme at Gotch Gardens is being carried out for affordable housing providers the Ocean Group, providing four two-bedroomed houses and four one-bedroomed bungalows – the first new homes for people to rent in the village for more than 17 years. Constructed by Redrut-based builders Rok, all eight homes should be complete and ready for occupation by early October – just 26 weeks after work started on the site. Rok site manager Abie Hearn said the speed of construction was highlighted by the fact that completing the blockwork on a single traditionally built house could take three weeks– the same time it will take to finish blockwork on the whole East Taphouse site. Abie added: 'The combination of modern and traditional methods means the actual build process is quite straightforward, yet the time saving due to the way the contract can be programmed, is amazing.' Using the same technology, Rok this month successfully completed a house for £60,000 – a goal set by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott – in South Somerset. Rok's area director, John Titcombe said: 'We are delighted to be working with Ocean, using these innovative techniques, to provide affordable homes to meet the needs of people in Cornwall.' The Ocean Group is working in partnership with Caradon District Council which agreed to sell land to Ocean for just £1.
