A COUPLE have branded a house-building company as 'heartless' after it sold the property they were about to move into to another bidder. Sam Dukes and Mark Day were two weeks away from moving into their new home at St Martin's Meadow, Liskeard, when George Wimpey contacted them to say that they had received a bulk offer for the majority of the properties on that site and therefore would not be continuing with the sale. The couple, who had spent months organising the move including setting up a mortgage, were left devastated by the news and to make matters worse they have to move out of their current accommodation as that is being sold in four weeks. 'We had literally bought the curtain rails to fit the windows and now the company has pulled out,' said Sam, a trainee teacher at Callington Community College.

Families

'We had to pay £500 to reserve it and if we had backed out we would have lost that. Wimpey has offered us a similar apartment in Plymouth but why would we want to live in Plymouth when our families are in Liskeard and Looe and we both work locally? 'They have been absolutely heartless. Legally they may be able to do it but morally it is wrong.' A George Wimpey spokesperson said: 'We can confirm that the apartments at our St Martin's Meadow development in Liskeard have been sold to a local housing association, resulting in one private reservation being cancelled. 'Although this is unfortunate, we do keep our customers fully informed with regard to any changes of this nature.'
