AN historically significant piece of Bodmin Moor has come up for sale and will be auctioned online on May 6.
The long-abandoned ancient settlement of Black Tor includes evidence of dozens of Bronze Age huts and enclosures, with numerous upright stones still visible.
The 118-acre plot at Blacktor Downs near St Neot has a guide price of £35-£40,000.
The land for sale includes open moorland and grazing land, a large modern cattle shed, and the traces of farmers and inhabitants gone by through the ages: there are prehistoric settlement remains, cairns, and medeival field boundaries.
The plot is accessible from Colliford Lake and the A30, and is not far from Bolventor, itself associated with moorland legends from the pen of author Daphne du Maurier.
Clive Emson’s senior auction appraiser David Henwood has described the sale as ’an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a substantial and historic piece of Bodmin Moor’.
He said: ’We expect keen interest from those looking to acquire a sizeable plot of moorland for amenity or recreational purposes, and the sheer privilege of being able to watch sunrises and sunsets in such an important and atmospheric location.’
