REACH OUT Group was recently given a double treat by the expert skills of local historian Brian Jones. On Thursday January 20, the first meeting provided a talk about Torpoint, in which Brian shared some fascinating information from Torpoint's rich historical archives. Some information included references to the Torpoint workhouse and also the impact of Torpoint on the D-Day assault. The talk was given with a relaxed and enjoyable style and everyone felt much more knowledgeable of his or her town. On Thursday February 3 the double bill continued where brian led an informative walking tour of the town. Using his knowledge, local landmarks were highlighted. A lively historical journey was given, particularly showing the reliance of Torpoint on Devonport dockyard. For example, the famous families such as the reynolds drew their wealth from the dockyard and impacted the town. He also showed the group the position of the old quarry and provided insights into the beginning of various churches, as well as dating the oldest houses. Overall, the history of Torpoint was brought to life and everyone who took part must have looked at Torpoint with new eyes.
