A WOMAN who underwent heart surgery just over a year ago is set to take part in a half-triathlon to raise funds and awareness for a heart charity. Beth Greenaway, from Saltash, last week left to take part in the Miami Man Half Iron Triathlon in Florida, USA, in aid of Grown Up Congenital Heart (GUCH) Patients' Association. Beth said: 'By completing this challenge, I want to show what some GUCH patients can achieve, and raise funds to support the organisation.' Personal trainer Beth, 34, first had open-heart surgery as a child and then had many years of good health before her condition deteriorated and she needed another major operation around a year ago. Before her operation, Beth was a keen athlete and took part in a lot of triathlons, runs and endurance events. She said: 'Although I have not done much since I moved back here in 2003, I did a lot in America. 'I really enjoy all aspects of the race and it felt natural to do this challenge.' The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run, completed consecutively in the fastest possible time. To prepare for the challenge Beth has been training for hours at a time six days a week. She said: 'It's going to be tough going, it's not something that is going to be over in an hour.' TRI-UK, the country's largest triathlon retailer and mail order specialist, has sponsored Beth for the event but she is now seeking donations from businesses and members of the public to raise money for GUCH.
